Dr. Joe Rodriguez was named Superintendent of Schools for Fredericksburg Independent School District in 2021. He began his career in education twenty-seven years ago, supporting schools in Austin ISD. Prior to joining Fredericksburg ISD, Rodriguez served in many roles as an educator.
Rodriguez received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Texas in Austin. As Rodriguez furthered his education, he received his master’s degree in educational administration and a doctorate in educational leadership from Texas A&M University in Kingsville. Serving in different teaching and administrative roles over the years led him to his previous position as Chief of Schools in Fort Bend ISD. While serving more than 78,000 students in FBISD, Rodriguez oversaw the day-to-day operations of all 82 schools and the following departments: Athletics, Career and Technical Education, Early Childhood, Fine Arts, School Leadership, and Student Affairs. In addition, Rodriguez ensured increased opportunities for students: including traditionally underrepresented student groups, which assisted in removing low-performing school designations and ensured all schools met the state’s accountability measures. Rodriguez also led the implementation of new programs that benefited adult and student performance, contributing to the District being awarded the 2018 H-E-B Excellence in Education Large-District Award, which included a $100,000 cash award.
During his first year at Fredericksburg ISD, Rodriguez was handed the task of passing an $82 million bond, which is the most significant bond in the history of the Fredericksburg community. While working with FISD Administrators to pull together a bond plan, Rodriguez implemented a community relations department within current day-to-day operations to ensure his commitment to the District and the traditions of the Fredericksburg ISD community. Rodriguez believes that the community and stakeholders must be informed and included as decisions are made within the District. Since arriving at FISD, Rodriguez has worked closely with administrators to lead the District to the largest pay increase in FISD, new district incentives, increased recognition on all levels, and the re-organization of leaders to better support teachers, parents, and students. Working closely with the FISD administration and the community gave Rodriguez the understanding and perception to reach the final planning of the new strategic plan. Rodriguez continues his goals to ensure partnership with the community.
The experience Rodriguez has gathered over the last twenty-seven years has allowed him to ensure a focus on educating the whole child and supporting teams of educators. With a desire to serve both children and adults, Rodriguez has invested his life in shaping the future of others through his role as friend, colleague, mentor, religious education teacher, and now superintendent. Rodriguez currently resides in Central Texas with his wife and children.
